Mitchell who is leaving his position as Chancellor of Seattle Community Colleges as he heads into semi-retirement.? The other story... well, there's a bit of mystery about this one.? New SCCtv Program That Could Save Lives

Knowing the risks for sudden cardiac arrest and getting immediate treatment can save lives.? But many people are unaware if they are at risk.? Tonight, at 9pm, SCCtv is airing "The Shocking Truth," a television special written and hosted by SCCtv's General Manager John Sharify for The Hope Heart Institute to illustrate this message through the powerful, emotional stories of those who have been affected by sudden cardiac arrest.? The special is part of Hope Heart's mission to raise awareness of improving the physical, emotional and spiritual quality of life for all at risk of, or afflicted with, heart and blood vessel disease.? SCCtv will stream the special on our Web site beginning tomorrow morning, should you miss tonight's airing (Comcast Ch 28/Millineum Ch 19).

Jean Walkinshaw Receives Awards

You may have noticed we are big fans of Jean Walkinshaw, the produce of Remarkable People.? She spoke at North Seattle Community College last week.? North's President, Ron LaFayette and SCCtv General Manager John Sharify surprised Jean following her comments with the Telly Awards she received earlier in the year.? Hear Jean's comments and see her shock as the statues are handed to her.

Notice for Remarkable People

The Seattle PI made mention of the new episode of the program Remarkable People, featuring 82 year old producer Jean Walkinshaw, now airing on SCCtv.? We hope you had a chance to watch the Sunday debut.? If not, the program airs November 9 and 16, the next two Sundays, at 10pm.? SCCtv is also airing new episodes our locally produced programming including Movie Marvels (with Professor Fred), Centuries of Great Music (featuring Orchestra Seattle) and other locally produced programming including "This Land is Our Land" (written, produced and narrated by SCCtv GM John Sharify) and Talk to Tara.

The Other Election

This Land is Our Land

SCCtv GM John Sharify takes you on an impactful journey in his new documentary, This Land is Our Land.? Sharify wrote, produced and narrates the documentary that takes you on tour through the red states' with the Seattle Men's Chorus and Seattle Women's Chorus.? The documentary airs on SCCtv Sunday, October 26 at 7:00pm, the evening following its debut at the 2008 Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.? The documentary will premier at Noon on Saturday, October 25, at the King Cat Theater in downtown Seattle.? View an excerpt.

Once again, remember, you're invited to the bi-annual (every two years) Professor Fred's Movie Marvels Live Monster Bash!? The SCCtv sponsored event is taking place from 7-9:30pm, Thursday, Oct 23rd at Baxter Events Center, North Seattle Community College!

Top Honor

Only one person in the country receives the National Edward R. Murrow Award for Writing each year. We're proud to say this year the honor goes to SCCtv General Manager John Sharify.? He received the award Monday evening, October 13, in a ceremony at the Grand Hyatt in N.Y.C.? Take a look at his winning entry and see John receive his award.

Scholarships Available

One of our clients, the National Educational Broadband Service Association (NEBSA), has asked that we let you know about a potential scholarship opportunity.? Called the Wireless Broadband Education Competition, the purpose of their competition is to challenge educational practitioners at every level to consider the possibilities of expanded wireless broadband. ?SCCtv's IRIS Education built the group's Web site.

Election Class

Two engaging and informative sessions to discuss this year's elections brought to you by Continuing Education at South Seattle Community College.? The first session will take place prior to the election, Monday, October 27, 6:30 to 8:30pm.? The second session takes place following the election, Monday, November 10, 6:30-8:30pm.? Both classes take place in Olympic Hall ?at SSCC.? State Senator and recent SSCC instructor Joe McDermott will facilitate the discussion.? Click for more information and to register.

Drilling for Safety

Although September has past, the message from National Preparedness Month should continue on.? Links to several resources, including the interactive Web site SCCtv's IRIS Education?team?created for the City of Seattle can be found here.? SCCtv/IRIS Education has also worked with the City of Seattle to produce the City of Seattle?Employee Disaster Preparedness online training and created a DVD version for citizens in 11?different languages, with five more coming this year.? You can also take a look at video from the drill that took place September 24th on the NSCC campus.

Connecting

John Sharify, SCCtv General Manager and Gina Cone,?Web Operations Manager (SCCtv/IRIS Education), are in the midst of an Education Content Conference blitz. ?Did you know SCCtv/IRIS Education streams?almost?70% of the educational video content produced in this country?? The nation's top content producers, such as Annenberg, Films Media Group, Ambrose Video and several independent producers as part of New?Day?Films DO know.? These groups and other institutions in the?US and Canada have been eagerly meeting with John and Gina at the National Media Market, National Educational Television Association and the Consortium of College and University Media Centers conferences?to learn what we can do to assist in getting their content into the hands of educators world-wide?.? Third Runway

One of the steps taken toward activating a new airport runway is to test computer gear that tells everyone where the plane actually is, at any given time in the landing/take-off process.? On September 25th, the Port of Seattle, the FAA and other agencies participated in a test of that computer gear using a brand new Alaska Airlines 737-800.? The plane's first "touch and go" was also the first time a commercial jet landed on the runway.? SCCtv was there to document it.

Outstanding Work

SCCtv General Manager John Sharify was honored with the "Outstanding Work" award from the TEARS Foundation.? John's television story on the group and it's mission, to provide parents financial assistance to pay funeral expenses when they've lost a baby, was included as part of his winning entry for the National Edward R Murrow Award in the Writing Craft category. ?John will receive the Murrow Award in New York on October 13.? Inspiration and reflection were strong themes at this year's Convocation, the traditional beginning of the school year for Seattle Community Colleges, held this past Wednesday, September 17.? Remarkable Host

SCCtv will air a new episode of Remarkable People featuring none other than the show's remarkable host, Jean Walkinshaw. Jean began her 45 years in broadcasting in 1963 at KING TV and her resume includes work with KCTS, PBS, NHK and much more.? With Remarkable People, which airs on SCCtv, 82-year old Jean offers viewers an opportunity to meet extraordinary people who made significant impacts in our community.? In this episode the tables are turned and Jean, who has made her own impact on our area, is the featured subject.? Recently two of these episodes were nominated for Regional Emmy Awards, three won Telly Awards and Jean was also honored with an Award of Distinction from the Communicator Awards.? Look for the latest episode to debut Sunday, August 10, at 7:00pm. It will run again the following Thursday at 10:00pm.

The Shocking Truth

We have just completed work on a project for the Hope Heart Institute.? The project seeks to raise awareness of the very real possibility of heart attack affecting us or someone we know through testimonial.? We will keep you posted on when you will get to view this important information.

Looking for Translation!

We are working with the City of Seattle to update their Disaster Preparedness video with five new translations.? Project coordinators with the city have people lined up to work on two of the translations but are still seeking persons who can translate the script into Laotian, Thai and Korean.? This volunteer project entails the translation of the material into written text and the voice recording of the material to be used on the DVD.? SCCtv General Manager Wins National Murrow

SCCtv General Manager John Sharify has been awarded the 2008 National Edward R. Murrow Award for Writing which recognizes the top large market broadcast news writer in the country.? The Edward R. Murrow Awards, awarded by the Radio-Television News Directors Association, honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism. ?Murrow's pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name.? John has the rare distinction of being a three time winner of the coveted National Murrow Award for Writing, receiving the award in 2004, 2007 and now, 2008.? The SCCtv staff congratulates John on this unique achievement.

Safety in Translation

SCCtv is currently working with the City of Seattle to translate into five more languages the disaster preparedness video we created previously.? The new translations should be available this fall.? You can view the video in English on our IRIS Education site on-line or view it in English, Cantonese, Somali, Tigrinya, Amharic, Spanish, Tagalog, Cambodian, Oromo and Vietnamese by visiting the city's Disaster Preparedness site.

Successful Webcast for the Local Emmy Awards Ceremony!

If you were one of the hundreds people watching the live Webcast of the Emmy Awards, Thank you!.? SCCtv streamed Saturday evening's event live and is continuing to make it available on demand. It was a great night for SCCtv's General Manager, John Sharify.? John received two Emmys for his reporting work at KOMO TV 4 News in the category "General News reporting 24 hours" and "Human Interest News Series."

SCCtv's Jean Walkinshaw was honored with two Emmy nominations for producing work on SCCtv's show Remarkable People.? Although Jean didn't win Emmy's on Saturday, Remarkable People has been honored with a number of other awards.

Remarkable People received three Telly Awards for Remarkable People: Jim Whittaker and Dianne Roberts, Remarkable People: Stefani Smith and Remarkable People: Pat Wright.

The program also received an Award of Distinction from the Communicator Awards for Remarkable People: Dr. Merrill Spencer.

Watch the Local Emmy Awards Ceremony Live!

You've likely heard of the Emmy Awards.? Did you know that local chapters of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences hand out local Emmy Awards to area broadcasters and production companies?? SCCtv will be streaming, live, our area's Emmy Awards this Saturday evening, June 7.? The program begins around 7pm and we will bring it to you in its entirety, without commercial break.? For those who wish to view the program later, the show will be available for "on demand" viewing after noon on Monday.

Sandy Cioffi - Released!

As you may already know, Sandy Cioffi, Seattle Central Community College faculty member and independent film maker, has returned from Nigeria where she and her film crew were detained.? Hear Sandy discuss their experience in an excerpt from a recently held panel discussion.

Senior Health Advisories

SCCtv recently produced a series of video pieces looking at health issues faced by seniors.? This series is streamed on our site and are airing on our cable channels (Comcast Channel 28, Millennium Channel 19).

New Programming on SCCtv

SCCtv is launching several new programs in the month of June.? Last Sunday we aired the first in a series called Centuries of Great Music featuring the music of Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers.? This weekend we begin airing a show called Talk to Tara, Intelligent Talk for Intelligent People, featuring in-depth discussions with guests including Cal Ripken, Jr and Michio Kaku.? News from SCCtv - Chancellor Mitchell Receives the President's Award from American Society for Public Administration

Seattle Community Colleges Chancellor, Dr. Charles Mitchell, receives the American Society for Public Administration's President's Award. Welcoming the Dalai Lama

SCCtv is please to announce a series of public service announcements produced to welcome the Dalai Lama and the concept of Spreading the Seeds of Compassion.

Each of the spots runs under a minute and can be viewed on SCCtv, Comcast channel 28 or Millennium channel 19, scattered throughout our programming.? They are the first in a series of pieces SCCtv will produce, focused on the Seattle visit by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.? SCCtv crew members are recording many of the events taking place during his visit, for use with these future pieces and potentially for educational use at Seattle Community Colleges.
